Have the abilities of science become more powerful as mankind grows more scientifically-minded?

I guess we as humans can do more with science than we used to be able to do, yes.

Would Kat's head-pigeon be allowed to take the test and become a real boy? Would the actual City-Face?

the pigeon on Kat's head is not a real pigeon

Wait, so can City Face read Kat's mind? Or has he died and become a spirit pigeon?

That's just a thing Zimmy is seeing. It's not a real pigeon.

Will the "Jones: Not a Robot" T-Shirt ever become reality? Because I would buy the hell out of it if it did.

Hmm, I'm not sure.

Robot seems to have become a lot more mature in the fourth volume of Gunnerkrigg Court-so much more serious! Did something happen to him that made him change so dramatically, or is it just robot...adolescence?

Just all the stuff that has been going on

I almost didn't recognize Eglamore today because he is not a big guy in this flashback. Did he become big due to his knight training, or has he simply not yet hit his growth spurt?

Yup

Tom, when fairies become human, do they still have dots on their arms?

Nopers

Could Aly take another test to become human again, or is that impossible?

Nope, he wouldn't be allowed

Does it mean that, even female animals will always become boys when they finally transform into Court students?

Yup

Hihi Mr. Tom. Advice pplease I don't want to be my major. But it's practical and I will have a job that will prove for my future. But all I want to do is write. I just want to write. I want to be an author. But...it's just not practical, not really.

Then do something stable to live and work on your own thing in your own time and see if it will become something you can rely on. If you do not want to give up things like free time, or going out, or playing videogames to dedicate to your writing, don't expect it to come to much.

In regards to the fire elemental Annie descended from: was it still a fire elemental at the time or had it taken the test and become human?

No, it was a normal fire elemental

What do the Anwyn count as, fairies or animals? If they count as neither, if an Anwyn were to become human, would he or she be male, female, or something else?

It is handled on a case by case basis, for creatures who are not becoming students in the Court. not everything that changes has to go to the forest or the school.

Your work ethic for creating Gunnerkrigg is inspiring. I have tried and failed at starting to draw my own comic literally for years and years now. Someday I hope to be like you, and just sit down and WORK. Were you always diligent from the start?

I don't think so, and that was part of my problem. One of the reasons I started the comic was to see if I could stick to a schedule and become more disciplined

Do all the fairies have grey eyes?

When they become human, yes.

Can the Anwyn become human too or is their situation different? They seem to be left out in this conversation about changing from the Woods to the Court since they don't seem to be the same kind of faeries you were referring to earlier.

None of the Anwyn family have ever wanted to become human. It's also extremely rare among their species to do that.

Who controls the test that lets animals and fairies become human? Is it something that the Court or Gillitie designed, or is it something else? How much does each side know about it, exactly?

It is usually something Coyote oversees, but he also has others to assist the process.

Hey Tom, I'm studying to become a game designer, since your comic is probably the best thing on the internet I might eventually try to make a small game based on it, if I actually do this, what sort of game would you want it to be?

Maybe a small puzzle game, or a bomberman style game with the robots?

I swear some of these questions seems like info for someone writing fanfiction. Tho the whole fairies reminds me of a manga where everyone was born girls and had to take a test to become men to keep the population going. Is that the same sort of idea?

I think I know the comic you are talking about, but no, this isn't that.

What about a girl animal? She would have to change her sex in order to become human? It's sad that you can't choose, especially for trans people, who might wish to change their sex.

Female animals become male humans, yes. I don't see how this affects trans people in any way.

So does the Court get to choose what gender the forest folk become when they pass the test?

Nope. The equation is simple anyway; fairies = girls, animals = boys

Do the female animals become male humans too? Also does that mean there are no male fairies?

That is correct on both accounts, yes.

Did Red become a super saiyan after training in the hyperbolic time chamber?

Nope, those are things from a different comic.

Are all the girls in Foley former fairies? I am confused if so because surely there must be some female animals that have taken the test and become human, not just males?

All the girls are former fairies, yes. Also yes, there were some female animals that want to be human. However, all the ex-animals are now male humans.

So immigrants to Gillitie Wood always become animals, while immigrants to the Court always become humans. Was this a deliberate choice by Coyote, Ysengrin and Renard, to keep immigrants to the Wood from messing things up?

Not exactly

Do city faeries have a test they can take to become human?

Nope

How is it harder to start a comic now then it was a few years ago? If anything I think people are looking for more great webcomics now as they become more popular.

There are a lot more comics now, so it is harder to get noticed, I would feel.

Whenever you've been asked about whether humans who become denizens of Gillitie Wood ever retain the sentience, you've never given a straight answer. Is this for plot reasons, or because you don't want to give internet perverts more to work with?

Well they are about as sentient as any other animals in the forest

Tom, remember that before you started GC, 100% of your audience didn't know they'd become fans of your work. So when you get a chance to do "something new," don't worry about the 90% who wouldn't be interested. Your other things will find its own audience

Sure, but I was lucky when I started GC. I think it is harder to get noticed when starting a new comic now.

Could Rey choose to take the test and simply become human? Why'd he swipe a body and kill someone if he could just get his own human body?

He wasn't sure what would happen, and didn't want to wait

Diego referred to Jeanne's lover as "that traitor"; "traitor" is a term Ysengrin also used for the forest dwellers who chose to become human. Does this mean that Jeanne's lover used to be a human, but chose to become an elf?

Nope, he was always an elf guy!

If Kat and Annie were to become forest creatures, what sort of animals would she become?

She who?

Regarding redrawing the older chapters, I think the artwork, though less accomplished, fits. Just as Antimony has grown, the world has become more complex, it kind of reflects her increasing maturity, if you know what I mean.

I think it's best left as it is, also. It's better to move forward than get stuck cleaning up your old work. I tmight be nice to re-jig some things one day, but it's not something I'm actively thinking about

Okay, okay. Let's say I wasn't really a male lesbian (MtF pre-op attracted exclusively to women) but pretended to be one, and then later found out that I was really a FtM trapped inside a cis-male body, so I had to become a female in order to become a mal

Take it to Tumblr

Could the Folley girls become fairies again if they wanted to?

I guess technically they could take the test again and go back.

Assuming it gets more 'diluted' (for lack of a better term) with each child, would the fire elemental 'blood' (ditto) ever become so thin that the mother wouldn't die?

Nope

Does Gamma's ability to help Zimmy become hampered when she gets sick?

Unknown

Do you play any video games? Would Gunnerkrigg ever become one :)

I do play videogames when I can find the time. Gunnerkrigg will never become one.

How does one become the headmaster of Gunnerkrigg Court?

Usually two ways. 1, You apply for the job and go through a series of interviews. 2, You are told that you are the headmaster.

Is "medium" a term for people with supernatural powers (wich would mean Annie is a medium by default) or is it an employment at the Court (wich would mean that Surma was a medium, because she got that job, but Annie might not become one)?

While "medium" is a generic term, "Court Medium" is a job and they are looking to fill that role.

Are you allowed to/do you make any changes to the comic before it becomes a book?

Yes I can change it as much as I want

Have you ever become friends with one of your readers?

no

Did Surma become severely ill (or, ill enough to be stuck in a hospital bed) when she became pregnant with Annie or after she gave birth to Annie?

After

For that matter, did Ysengrins body become weak immediately after he got Coyote's gift?

Not exactly

I noticed that, as the comic progresses, Antimony becomes increasingly emotional. Is this happening due to hormones, her friendship with Kat, or some other factor?

A lot of factors, really

Did Jones train Surma to become a medium?

no

Did Renard only become bitter because Surma died?

He's bitter about a few things

I can't help but notice that Rey's tongue has turned pink and that there seems to be some spit or tears flying about. Is that artistic liberty, or did his transformation become more "real" because of his emotions?

It's just how he is

When does art stop "stagnating" and become a "style?"

When it is good

Does the requirement to give all the chapters an odd number of pages become annoying? Like, you write out the chapter and it ends on an even number of pages, so you need to add or delete a page somewhere.

it sometimes happens, but I catch it at the planning stage of the chapter, so it's not really a problem

That door that Annie went through to enter Zimmy's world to save Jack...what does it normally lead to, and why did it become the entrance to Zimmy's world?

It leads to the roof

I have been reading GC to my impressionable younger siblings for a while. Tonight my little brother told me a story about Blinker Warriors, an alien race with blinker stones for heads. Your work has become a part of our family's mythology. Thanks.

cools, thanks

When exactly in Spring Heeled did Annie and Zimmy become each other?

As soon as Annie opened the door

When exactly in Spring Heeled did Annie and Zimmy become each other?

As soon as Annie opened the door

Firstly, I have recently become re-obsessed with your comic. Awesome work. Secondly, is the court named after the Artilleryman? (Gunner's Crag) Or were the faeries just screwing up the name?

It's just a thing

What is Jones' position at the court? Could whoever doesn't become medium take over that position instead?

remains to be seen

what does Annie want to become when she grows up?

she doesn't know

Is there a chance for a human with great etheric powers to become a psychopomp after his or her death?

It's happened before

Since the beginning of the comic, Annie has become a lot less stoic, probably thanks to Kat. Is there any reason she was so stoic in the first place?

yes

How did Rey become immortal?

by never dying

If a human takes the test, becomes an animal and goes to the Wood, would it be possible for them to become human again?

perhaps

If a human took the test, became an animal and went to the Gillitie Wood, could they become a sentient animal? Is it possible that they could speak?

perhaps

You know, one of the many things I love about your comic are your comments under the pages, they always make me smile :) And the fact that you stop commenting the pages whenever the subject becomes quite serious is also great! Thanks a lot for everything!

thanks

Did Mort become a ghost because there was no psychopomp to take him? Would the same have happened to Surma or the boy from chapter 16 if Annie hadn't been there?

No, Mort had a special arrangement

Is the Court still man's endeavour to become God, or has this goal been lost in time? Or has man already BECOME God?

Remains to be seen

Couldn't the fairy man have taken the test to become human?

That wasn't in place at the time

It is known at the Court that nothing can cross through the Annan waters, so if Annie ever frees Jeanne's soul and the river becomes 'unprotected', people at the Court will notice it?

remains to be seen

Do John and Margo actually become a couple?

remains to be seen

You said the wolf and the bird in today's page are "just forest animals". But are they (or will they become) significant characters?

no

GC is a very beautiful webcomic and it never ceases to amaze me, both the story and the artwork are awesome. It also inspires me to draw more and become better just as you have become. Thank you Tom for such a wonderful work!- a fan from Mexico =)

thanks

Has the court ever had people take the test to become animals in order to spy on the forest?

no

when a human takes the test to become a forest creature, do they only get to choose from some type of animal, or could they become some other etheric creature, like a fairy or whatnot?

yeah they can be what they want, etheric or not

Ysengrin believes forest creatures who become human are "traitors." What does he think of humans who become forest creatures?

He wouldn't trust them too much, but would appreciate that they saw the error of their ways

I know that, technically, everything you do moves you toward a goal, but do you feel that making a living out of your comic has become a real possibilty by now?

no

If Annie were to tell Reynardine to stay in one place, then Annie's life was suddenly in danger, would Reynardine still be forced to stay there or would the command become obsolete if he wanted to try to save her?

Nope, he'd have to stay there

Would the Court ever allow a robot turned android to become a student there and be otherwise integrated with the other students? Would they even allow it to exist?

The robots have their own education system

would Coyote had become any less powerful if he had made Reynardine as powerful as he (Coyote) wanted to?

No

Did Surma become ill before or after she had Antimony?

After

"When going on a trip/flight, I assume the worst is going to happen. So I got today and tomorrow to put my affairs in order. " That's a terrifying mind set. Now I've become paranoid. I hope you don't die, and also have a safe trip.

Thanks

I think Michael (the archangel) is also a traditional psychopomp in Christian tradition (though not in Jewish or Islamic such) - but your comment about St. Peter: Does that mean once living humans can at occasion become Psychopomps after their deaths?

Yes

When Annie becomes more enthusiastic as she speaks, I can't imagine it, I'm too used to her being matter-of-fact, what does she sound like with emotion?

She sounds like someone being more enthusiastic I guess

What do you think becomes of an individuals memories after they pass away.

they die

It seems Anthony and Eglamore were only around each other because they were both friends with Donald, but how did the guys become friends with girls from one of the weirdo houses?

It kinda started when Donny and Anja first saw eachother

If your comic becomes really famous and they make movies of it will you become a typical celebrity? Do American talk shows, sell products? Marry another celebrity and name your kids odd names, get divorced and remarried often?

I just want to work on my comic. I haven't got time for that stuff.

I went back months and searched for "sex", but I didn't see the "sexual orientation" answer, so: Doesn't sexual orientation, hetero or homo or whatever, become a plot point as soon as there's any kind of romance at all? Is that what you meant?

I suppose you could say that.

You somehow become CEO of the company you work at. Awesome or horrible?

Mind shatteringly horrible

have you got any specific character that works as a comic relief to the comic?

Not specifically. It would be too easy for Renard to become the comic relief but I don't want to do that.

Do you get any satisfaction out of the way your style has evolved during the course of your Gunnerkrigg comic? Has turning out pages become easier for you now that you've had so much practice?

It seems to be getting harder. And things still don't look as good as I want them to.

Did Jack really just levitate out the window? If so, why all this business with a boat?

would have been awkward to carry Annie and Renard across the lake. He didnt know Renard could become smaller

(Case in point for the concept that overproduction is bad: overproduced music, that sounds so clean and crisp that it becomes lifeless, and also most new console games)

Overproduction is not what makes something bad, it's a rubbish idea to start off with. There is plenty of music that is made to digital perfection that sounds great. On the other hand, even good ideas need a little polish before they become great.

I seem to recall you said Zimmy's condition became worse over time. At what point did it become a serious problem? Has it continued to get worse even after she met Gamma?

Her condition was at its worst right before she met Gamma. Since then it has eased off due to Gamma's presence.

Has Jack become aware he's in a webcomic?

No. I don't even know where this train of thought began.

As an artist, one of the most interesting parts of reading a webcomic is watching the art change, become more detailed, more well stylized. How long have you been drawing?

Long enough that I should be a hell of a lot better than I am.

Ignore this if it has been asked before, but what is the reason for which Kat and Janet didn't become friends (Being some of the few Court tykes and all)?

They were kind of friends, but didn't really hang around eachother when they moved up to the normal school.

Has Kat become so bitter that she no longer cries when she reads Batman?

Yup.

Hello Mr Siddell. Since there are no dragons in the present timeline of the comics, wouldnt the forest want more dragons and are fastracking applications for humans who want to become dragons?

No.

If Surma was still alive, even though she had left the Court would she still be considered a Court medium? In other words, once you become a medium, will you always be considered so?

Yes if Surma was still at the Court she would still have her job.

We know some of the students used to be fairies or animals in the forest. Is the same true for some of the staff? If not, does that mean adult creatures can't become human?

Yeah some of the staff used to be forest cretures that have grown up as humans. Adult creatures could apply for the change if they wanted.

Your sarcastic claim up until now that Volume 2's release date was still Noverber 2009 seems to suggest that you've become jaded by the world of book publishing. Have you?

I think it is a very easy world to become jaded with.

You've been kind of vague about this, so I'd like to be absolutely sure: do all humans who become residents of Gillitie Wood become more-or-less insentient, normal (by Gillitie standards) animals, as opposed to sentient mystical/mythical beings?

Maybe.

Are there restrictions to what animals humans can choose to become in the forest? Without proper control I'd imagine that exotic animals could ruin the food chain of a forest, even a magical one.

Yeah a lot of humans want to be dragons, but they get turned away because they're usually just posers.

If you spin an oriental man around, does he become disoriented?

I suppose anybody would.

I wish I could muster the motivation to improve as much as you have since you started out, and I can't wait to see how great you will become. Some webcomic artists get stuck in a comfort zone, but you seem to drive yourself to new heights all the time.

Thank you.

Did you expect your comic to become this popular?

No.

When did the Robot King become the leader (?) of the robots, and is there really trouble in the ranks?

He became important when they realised he could show his emotions. Something the other robots aren't that great at doing.

Did Reynardine want Surma to eventually take the test and become one of the forest folk?

He would have been fine if she hadn't, but he also wouldn't have complained about her becoming, say, a nice vixen. Coyote could have fixed her up with a special deal.

Was Annie hoping that Jack and Kat might become a couple before she realized Jack was creepy, based on how Annie's eyes lit up when she thought he was asking about Kat?

She was just surprised a guy was asking her about her friend.

Does Annie's new tooth sword actually turn into a sword, or is it an illusion?

It becomes a real sword.

I seem to recall you said Zimmy's condition became worse over time. At what point did it become a serious problem? Has it continued to get worse even after she met Gamma?

It got worse right up until she met Gamma. Since then it has plateaued and sometimes even gotten a little better.

Did it suddenly become fashionable to wear jackets in the court? Jack, Annie, and Kay are all wearing them.

It became fashionable to wear coats when it's kind of cold out, yes.

Has there ever been a question you’ve regretted answering, because it’s recently become a spoiler?

I try to be careful about that sort of thing.

Does Reynardine become intangible when he leaves a body?

I suppose you could say that.

How did Eglamore, Donnie, and Anthony become friends with Anja and Surma?

Mainly cos Donny had a crush on Anja.

Do you think the comic will last long enough to see Antimony become some master at doing etheric thingies without her blinker stone? Seeing her pluck that flower was neat.

Yeah, she will get better at that kind of thing as the comic goes on.

Can the coyote teeth become any type of blade, or just the one we saw it as?

Just the one that we saw in that panel, though its properties haven't been explored yet.

Five days ago you wrote that it's far less common for girls to give blinker stones to guys than the reverse. Will we learn how guys get them in the first place in order to give them to girls? — DrBubbles from GKC forums

Maybe, if it becomes relevant to the story. That kind of thing might be better in a side story.

is gunnerkrigg court going to have an ending or will it go on to become stale and washed up like many webcomics are these days?

There will be an ending.

:) you've said you don't want to become unimaginative enough to have a straight up moustache twirling villain, but that strikes me as something that might be fun to draw... maybe the Spacemonauts could come up against one? :D

Sure, maybe.

Did you originally intend for Kat to be so science/technology-minded, or did that just gradually become part of her character?

No that was her personality from the start.

One thing I've always found interesting about GC is that there's no clear "villain," just a lot of characters with their own agendas. Will this remain the case, or will we see a true antagonist emerge at some point?

I hope I don't become unimaginative enough to have a straight up moustache twirling villain.

Any realized phobias, Tom? Or personal quirks?

I'm not sure when a personal fault becomes a quirk.

Are any social restrictions put into place after someone becomes a court medium?

Not that I can think of.

When a human becomes an inhabitant of Gillitie Wood like Ally did, is there a chance that he/she will retain sentience, or will he/she definitely become a non-sentient being? If sentience is retained, will memories also be retained?

The transition to animal form is complete, but then animals in the comic are not exactly the same as animals in real life.

Renard is a interesting character is his role going to become more fleshed out as the story progresses?

I hope so, yes.
